Every Friday, another H&H blog post will be released. Each post will have an associated song that you can watch and listen to via YouTube. The songs are written from a perspective other than my own. This week the song is written from the perspective of girls on a "girls weekend!" Click HERE to listen to this week's song called "Girls Weekend."
It's not everyday that a 23 year old boy gets to crash in on a "girls weekend." But due to some mechanical problems last week, I was lucky enough to be given that opportunity... twice.
My girlfriend lives in Nashville, and I was visiting her as part of my country-wide road trip. The plan was to stay for a few days and then leave town on Thursday as her college roommates starting arriving for the their "girls weekend" plans.
But alas, AMBO wasn't going to let me off that easy. Instead, the 1988 Ford e350 engine decided not to start. Aftering getting towed to a mechanic, I realized I was about to embark on my first ever "girls weekend" adventure, if they let me.
Coincidentally, my mother and her own set of lady-friends had plans to party in Nashville this very same weekend. Normally, males are not welcome on these excursions. This was one of those times. However, given the nature of my circumstances, they made an exception to grab lunch and drinks with me. I was honored.
So I decided to write a song about what these weekends are all about.
I had heard rumors that the make-up, outfit, and hairstyle manufacturing could be deadly, but I didn't know the half of it. At about 6pm, the girls would begin to awaken from their afternoon naps (which I happily joined them in), and this is when decisions started being made.
Can I try on your shirt? Does your purse go with my shoes? Should I curl or straighten? The time and thought put into these decision astounded me.
Meanwhile, I threw on my baseball-T and jeans, sat on the couch and surfed the internet. A unique concoction of Beyonce, Kanye, Selena Gomez, Jeremiah, Carrie Underwood, and Dolly Parton could be heard from the bathroom bluetooth speaker. About two hours later, it seemed everybody was ready to go. Whew, phase one was down!
Commence phase two: pictures. I was given the camera duties, which I graciously accepted knowing I was lucky to be allowed here in the first place. It became very clear very quickly that I did not understand the "angles" that were essential to making every girl look amazing simultaneously in one perfect picture. About 30 minutes later, it seemed I had exhausted their patience and they surrendered to phase three.
After some last-minute outfit adjustments and pre-game shots of tequila, we called the Uber and headed to the bars. We danced and bought drinks and had a grand ole' time. It surprised me how much song choice mattered to these ladies... one even spent $40 across two different bars to hear the live bands play their renditions of "Jolene." And wow, when "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood starts to play, LOOKOUT.
We danced until the bouncers kicked us out, and found ourselves caught in the rain. Somehow we made it home, soaking wet. Phase three complete.
Now for the most important phase: brunch. These ladies KNOW how to brunch. I'll leave it at that.
Then, we did it all over again :)
I had a great time and hopefully these girls didn't feel too strange about my attendance. Maybe next time the boys get together we'll have a girls weekend too.
Lyrics:
when's the last time the gang was all here?
we graduated just last year
we used to do this every friday night
we all flew in from out of town
don't need no man to show us around
we'll explore the city, then hit the bars tonight
cuz it's a girls weekend, start drinkin'
somebody pour her tequila!
i bet she's got no alibi
cuz we're hot messes, tight dresses
local boys will buy us tequila!
DJ play our favorite song tonight
oh cuz girls just wanna have fun
wake me up for saturday brunch
turn it into a late lunch
i hope they've got that avocado toast
forgot my purse at the bar
let's go find a shopping cart
don't tell hubby, he doesn't have to know
cuz it's a girls weekend, start drinkin'
somebody pour her tequila!
i bet she's got no alibi
cuz we're hot messes, tight dresses
local boys will buy us tequila!
DJ play our favorite song tonight
girls we just wanna have fun
oh girls we just wanna have fun
